Ethics classes are among the compulsory subjects (alternatively to religion classes) : The studentsA  optA  for either ethics or religion classes. Ethics classes deal with essential problems of human being, it actually asks what makes the human being a human being, how the human being can continue to be human. Ethics as a discipline of philosophy sees itself as a science of moral conduct.

Ethics classes sets itself the goal of deducing commendable values and norms which are indispensable for peaceful coexistence in our society. It endeavours to raise the question what the meaning of life is, to deepen it and get to know possible answers.

Ethics classes offer students help in shaping their own lives by calling upon their personal responsibility and self-determination. Teaching tolerance, self-control and taking over responsibility are also important education goals.

In ethics classes, situations and problems from the immediate experience of students in the family, in everyday-life and in school are dealt with, action alternatives are examinedA  and suggestions for a rational way of dealing with conflicts are developed.

Ethics classes apply to partial values of practical philosophy, and to questions and recognitions ofA  religious studies and social studies. It takes up the contents of many other subjects, for instance German, languages, natural science and social studies.

Ethics classes do not indoctrinate in any way. The results of finding action alternatives and varying judgment points must remain open . It is not the views that are assessed but the ability to argue factually.
